Oriental Rug Designs – Identifying the Style That’s Right for You

When shopping for your next handmade oriental rug, these are the three primary rug design types from which to choose:

• Traditional - These rug designs often feature more classical patterns, such as floral images or large, elaborate medallion shapes in the “Ottoman” style of the late fourteenth century. These designs can be either Hereke or Usak.

• Tribal - This group features more geometric patterns, with some motifs dating back to the time of the nomadic tribes of ancient Persia and Turkey. These designs can be either Kazak or Yoruk.

• Contemporary - Most often chosen when a more modern look is desired, the contemporary style of rug often feature a blending of old-world detail with modern patterns appropriate for virtually any décor. These designs are frequently Gabbeh.
